Behind The Vision
Loredana Onesan and Akino Mcleish are two inspiring individuals who are leading the charge for a better, more equitable Kanata. As first-generation immigrants, they came to this country with a shared goal of achieving a higher education and financial success. However, their different journeys through the Canadian system gave them unique perspectives on its flaws and challenges in pursuit of their goals. Through their experiences, they realized that inequality and injustice are the core drivers of a broken social and economic system. A system built on the displacement and trauma experienced by indigenous communities. A system fuelled by racist, and prejudice policies perpetrating the cycle of trauma and poverty experienced by indigenous and other minority communities. Their passion for creating a legacy of more just and equitable society for future generations drives them to create the change that will make a difference. As a team, Loredana and Akino bring an exceptional level of intelligence, dedication, experience and fresh ideas to address society's shortcomings. They see the playing field from both sides of the spectrum. Their mission is to empower and support indigenous communities and other minority groups and everyone affected by this broken system; ensuring a better tomorrow for everyone. By doing so, they HOPE to make significant strides towards creating a fairer, more just society based on a solid foundation
Meet Our Advisor
Chief Delbert Riley is a longstanding Indigenous leader belonging to the Crane Clan of the Chippewa Nation. Chief Riley occupies a position as a hereditary Chief of his nation, and has served in local, provincial, and national elected leadership positions. Chief Riley began his career in Indigenous politics in the early 1970s as a land claims researcher and though he retired in 2005, he continues to work part-time as a consultant for traditional Indigenous people today.
Chief Riley’s most significant contributions to Indigenous rights were made through his involvement in negotiating for the inclusion of Sections 25 and 35 of the Canadian Constitution as President of the National Indian Brotherhood, the fore-runner organization to the Assembly of First Nations. Chief Riley was elected President of the NIB on the platform of securing the inclusion of Aboriginal and Treaty rights in the Constitution Act, and was successful in doing so. Chief Riley opened an international office for the National Indian Brotherhood in London, England to carry out lobbying efforts there, and was personally assured by Jean Chretien that Sections 25 and 35 would be added to the Canadian constitution if he closed down the office.

THAMES MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Thames Music Festival was a grand success, held on private property at Wellington South street Intersection. The festival celebrated the diversity of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous cultures through Music, Cuisine, Arts & Crafts, and aimed to bring people from all backgrounds and cultures together to celebrate our shared ancestry.
The festival was launched on the lands once inhabited by the proud Chippewa of the Thames First Nations, who were the protectors of the beloved river. It was a wonderful opportunity for attendees to experience the rich history and culture of the region.
With over 30 local vendors showcasing sweets, treats, eats, and arts and crafts, the festival was a feast for the senses. Attendees tasted a variety of cuisines, enjoyed the exquisite craftsmanship of local artists, and spent the evening with their favourite bands in a setting full of history. The festival was a family affair, with attendees bringing their children for fun and play, including face painting, hair braiding, Puppet Theater, magic shows, and more.
The entertainment line-up was impressive, featuring an opening ceremony and Native Pow Wow Dancers, as well as bands such as Wardens Office, Deuces Wild, Pure Flavour, Robbie Antone's Blues Machine, The Joel Dupuis Band, Christopher Campbell: "thefenyxfyre" Thrill FREAK Show, and Three Step Snake - a hard rock band with blues and funk influences. The headliner and feature entertainment was the one and only Bobnoxious.
Overall, the Thames Music Festival was a fantastic event that celebrated the diversity of cultures and backgrounds. We look forward to seeing everyone at next year's festival, and we thank all attendees, vendors, and performers for making last year's festival such a memorable and enjoyable experience.
See you all next year!
